Hysterical Stars is a twisting, weirdly catchy record with a mix of dense and delicate arrangements that outshine their four piece indie rock contemporaries. The record progresses through shifting styles — hyper dance songs (“Easy Street”, “Do the Cavern”), a surrealistic children’s song (“The Sausage Canoe”), elegies for musical heroes (“Song for Richard Manuel”), etc. — but never loses its cohesive core of smart lyrics and ambitious orchestration. This record is for fans of Arcade Fire, Brian Eno, Beulah, Flaming Lips and other sophisticated makers of pop music.
